Minutes of HCMC Meeting held at the Chieftain Hotel, Inverness on Tuesday 5th August 2008 at 8.00 p.m.

PRESENT 21 members
APOLOGIES George Christie, Brian Fieldsend and Mark Bruce.
MINUTES of meeting held on 1st July were read and approved by Neil Ellison and Tom Elliott
ARIEL MOTORCYCLE GSV 188 The paperwork regarding this bike is now in order with the DVLA, and it is booked in for an MoT on 6th August, after which it is available for sale. (contact Bert McKay)
CHAIRMAN'S CHALLENGE Despite the list being produced late in the season, one member Steve McNeil has already visited all the destinations .
CLUB RUN On 27th July 13 bikes assembled at Dingwall and at the Skiach junction where they were joined by another two. The route taken was over Struie to Ardgay and the along a single track road by Carbisdale Castle to Rosehall and on to Shin Falls. There was a visit to the falls to see salmon leaping and a long stop for refreshments. The weather held during the run but there was some rain at Struie on the homeward journey.
BIKES THROUGH THE AGES This static display will be at Falcon Square, Inverness on Saturday 23rd August from 10 a.m. until 4.00 p.m. Access will be from the loading area at the rear of Debenhams, alongside Platform 1 at the railway Station. As there is no parking, trailers will have to be removed to Morrison's Supermarket Car Park for which the club will reimburse the cost of any parking fee. Members who are to supply machines should inform Paul Marrs with details of their machines so that suitable information sheets can be prepared Sheeting for drip trays will be supplied by Paul. Club Memoribilia will also be on sale.
NEW MEMBERS John Williams, Nairn and Martin Torrid, Inverness have now joined the club and an application has been received from Steven MacGregor. Another potential member, Bill Ross, Inverness was present at the meeting.
VINTAGE PAINT COMPANY This company based at P.O. Box 1858, Wolverhampton can still supply authentic paint colours and finishes, including cellulose. They can be contacted at Tel 0870 200 3334. or by email at mail@vintagepaint.com
VEHICLE DATING OFFICER Bert McKay, who carries out this duty on behalf of the HCMC reports that the DVLA is tightening up procedures regarding the retention of original registration marks. They have produced a form containing all the details which they want included in the inspection forms and certificates supplied by clubs. A specimen form, which includes the club logo, has been produced by Bert. This was accepted as suitable for the purpose. The DVLA ask if the HCMC is affiliated to the FBHV, which we are not, but we are paid up members of the SVVF, which will presumably have the same authority.
WESTERN ISLES TRIP This was originally included in the activities to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Club, and was proposed for September 2008. It is estimated that the cost would be about £100 for ferry fares plus fuel and accommodation. There was insufficient interest to make the trip this year, but it could be reconsidered for 2009. Neil suggested the alternative of a week-end trip to Thurso during September and support is requested for this.
LONDON MOTORCYCLE SHOW Correspondence has been received advertising space at the show for club stands. The charge is £1,500 for a 9 sq. metre floor space and £3,000 for 25 sq. metres. Though there is no likelihood of this club participating, the costs make it unlikely that many will take up the offer, other than commercial businesses.
FORRES THEME WEEKEND This was well supported in good weather with a good turnout of bikes of all ages.
NORTON RALLY AT STIRLING Brian Fieldsend and Tom Elliott attended this event, transporting their machines by van. Of the 150 plus bikes on display the majority were Commandos. They enjoyed their time with good weather and good food & beer.
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING members were reminded that the AGM will follow the Club Meeting on Tuesday 2nd September when a new committee will be elected. (No motions have been received for discussion at the AGM.)
ENTERTAINMENT Suggestions for talks at future meetings were (1) Colin MacGregor, brother of Ewen MacGregor (2) Kevin Morrison, KDM Motorcycles, Nairn - Motorcycle Training. (Tel. No. 0750.6688205

CRITICISM OF HCMC EVENT Though this matter had been discussed and minuted at the July Club Meeting, copies of a 3 page letter, from Jim Saysell were taken to the meeting requesting that they be distributed to club members. This was done and due to the nature and number of the complaints it was agreed that members read the letter at their leisure and consider its contents. As the criticism was quite detailed, the matter will require discussion at a future meeting.

Tip for safer biking, courtesy of BIKE SAFE Scotland :- "Avoid Skin Grafts" - wear something sensible.

Trainers will not protect your feet. A T-shirt will not stop you being struck by insects and debris. So wear reasonable footwear, at least a pair of jeans and some sort of jacket, with sleeves. A pair of gloves may help you keep the skin on your hands, and use the fasteners on your helmet. Bees & wasps will often sting on contact with unprotected skin.

How many chipped & broken car windscreens have you seen ... these flying stones will hit you! Remember, you do not have much to say in where and when you may fall off.

Q :- Will it cause problems if I use 10W-40 car oil instead of 10W-40 bike oil?
A :- You are better off using purpose made bike oil. Car oils have anti-wear additivies, which might cause clutch slip on bikes with wet clutches.

Tip - Avoid ear infections. Make sure you replace your disposable earplugs regularly. The dirt they pick up from your fingers and from being left lying around can very easily cause ear infections.
